Māori King Tūheitia Has Sadly Passed Away: Māori King Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII has passed away at the age of 69, just days after marking the 18th anniversary of his coronation. The respected leader, who was hospitalized for heart surgery, died peacefully this morning surrounded by his family, including his wife Makau Ariki and their children Whatumoana, Korotangi, and Ngawai Hono I Te Po.
A statement from the office of the Kiingitanga expressed profound sorrow at the loss of Tūheitia, noting that his death represents a significant moment of grief for followers of Te Kiingitanga, Māoridom, and the entire nation. The statement described his passing as a “great sadness,” highlighting his role as a pivotal figure in Māori culture and leadership.

Tūheitia Paki, born in 1955 in Huntly, New Zealand, was educated in Waikato and Auckland. He ascended to the role of King on August 21, 2006, following the death of his mother, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu. His reign has been marked by a deep commitment to Māori issues and representation on both national and international stages.
In accordance with Māori tradition, Tūheitia will lie in state at Turangawaewae Marae for five days. He will then be taken to his final resting place on Taupiri Mountain, a site of great significance in Māori culture.
